Greg Hawkes, Musician
The unique style of Greg Hawkes, best known for being the keyboard player of The Cars, is well known and can be heard on classic Cars’ songs such as “Just What I Needed,” “Let’s Go” and “Drive.” The Cars were one of the most influential bands of the late 70’s and 80’s, and released six albums from 1978 to 1987, including The Cars, CandyO, Panorama, Shake It Up, Heartbeat City, and Door To Door. The first new Cars’ album since 1987, Move Like This, was released in 2011.
Aside from The Cars, Greg Hawkes has performed and recorded with a diverse array of artists, from Martin Mull to Paul McCartney, from Todd Rundgren to The Turtles. He released a solo album in 1983 titled Niagara Falls, a mostly instrumental album of synthesizer compositions. He composed and recorded the soundtrack music for the film Anna, released by Vestron Pictures in 1987.
More recently, Greg released The Beatles Uke, an album of Beatles songs recorded in “Ukesymphonic” fashion, overdubbing several tracks of ukuleles to create a virtual ukulele orchestra. He has also become a unique solo performer, playing the ukulele (and other instruments) and performing his original songs as well as many selections from The Cars’ catalog. He has appeared at several ukulele festivals, clubs, and private events. Greg continues to play keyboards with The Turtles (featuring Flo & Eddie), in addition to contributions on various recording projects.
